The Beta Lambda Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. celebrated 74 years of service in the Raleigh and surrounding Wake County community on December 10, 2023, by sponsoring an advanced screening of the movie The Color Purple, which is a screen adaptation of the Broadway play by the same name. Both the play and the movie are based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book The Color Purple, written by Alice Walker and published in 1982. Fantasia Barrino-Taylor, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., plays the starring role of Celie.

The chapter was able to fill two theaters in the Regal Cinemas at North Hills, with Sorors and members of the public who were excited to get an exclusive first look at the movie. Sorors came dressed in blue and gold Sigma Gamma Rho sweaters or in purple to celebrate the movie. Sorors were extremely proud to see their very own, Soror Barrino-Taylor, repRHOsenting this GREAT Sorority.

The Beta Lambda Sigma alumnae chapter was chartered on December 10, 1949, in Raleigh, NC by schoolteachers who were dedicated to serving the youth of their community. Today, the chapter is proud to have over 100 women as members who hold positions in media, education, medicine, finance, among others. The chapter is focused on executing the sorority's national service initiatives, such as the Youth Symposium and Swim 1922.
