Congratulations to Bugg Magnet Elementary School teacher, Aneesa McKenzie Thompson, recipient of the 2024, the "Star Among Us" Award.
The Star Among Us Award honors a Wake County Public School System educator who has made a significant impact both within their school and the broader community.
Educators were nominated through an open community process, receiving over 200 submissions from across the district. From these nominations, teachers chose to advance in the selection process, ultimately leading to the selection of 9 finalists, including Ms. McKenzie Thompson.
Ms. McKenzie Thompson's teaching journey is driven by her passion for nurturing young minds and fostering an inclusive and positive learning environment. At Bugg Magnet Elementary Center for Design & Computer Sciences, she has dedicated herself to making education engaging and accessible for all her students, while also building strong connections with students and families. One of her notable accomplishments is founding the Bugg Beta step team for 3rd through 5th graders, providing students with opportunities to develop teamwork, discipline, and self-expression through stepping. She believes every child deserves a superhero, and her superpower lies in empowering and inspiring all students, with equity and equality as her guiding principles.
This award includes a $5,000 prize for each recipient and will be presented on October 30, 2024, at WakeEd’s 11th Annual Stars of Education Gala.
