GREATER Reimagined!


This month, we salute our GREATER Soror, Dr. Patrena Benton Elliott. Soror Elliot is the first woman to serve as President of Halifax Community College in Weldon, North Carolina.

Soror Elliot is an accomplished administrator with over 25 years of higher educational experience in all areas of academia; particularly in the areas of post baccalaureate programs, graduate education, academic affairs, and medical education.

Soror Elliot previously served as Vice President and Chief Academic and Student Affairs Officer at Robeson Community College in Lumberton, NC. Additionally, Dr. Elliott has held various senior administrative positions including Chief Executive Officer of a statewide inter-institutional center in the University of North Carolina System, Graduate College Dean, Honors College Director, and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Throughout her career, she has implemented scholastic programs from certificate to graduate level, raised millions of dollars in institutional funding, advised numerous students, and has numerous speaking engagements throughout the country.


Dr. Elliott earned a B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a M.S. in Adult Education and a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from North Carolina A&T State University. She also holds Higher Education/Leadership Certificates from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, Leadership Raleigh, Hampton University, and the University of North Carolina System.


Dr. Elliott has been inducted in several honor societies and is the recipient of multiple leadership awards. In addition to being a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated since November 1992, she is also a member of The Links, Incorporated. Dr. Elliott is married to Dr. Stanley Elliott and together they are the proud parents of a daughter, Jordan, a recent graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and a son, Sterling, a freshman, and Cheatham White Scholar at North Carolina Central University.
