The sorority has a proud history of offering service wherever chapters exist, including OPERATION BigBookBag, a program designed to address the needs, challenges and issues that face school-aged children who are educationally at-risk in local homeless shelters and extended care hospitals.
Other national projects include Wee Savers, Project Reassurance, Mwanamugimu Essay Contest, and Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness.
Sigma Gamma Rho also partners with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Africare, and St. Jude’s Research Hospital. We are proud of a recent partnership with USA Swimming, Swim 1922, which aims decrease the number drowning deaths in minority communities by offering swim clinics and water safety education.
On the local level, Beta Lambda Sigma supports our national programs and partners with fundraising and service projects including Zumba for a Cause, supporting Hattie McDaniel Cancer Awareness and WRAL’s Coats for the Children, which serves the Greater Triangle area by supplying cold weather supplies for less fortunate children in our community. In 2015 we launched our support of BackPack Buddies volunteering monthly to help pack food for children. We also provide food and cash donations annually. This year, we will begin an on-going partnership with the Girls Club.
